Creative writing is an important component of all of our degree programs, and we also welcome interested students from any major to explore our courses in creative writing.
Undergraduates can select from two workshop offerings at ENG 205 Creative Writing and at least two at ENG 305 Advanced Creative Writing workshops in poetry, fiction, literary nonfiction, and screenwriting.

Courses are offered in Kingston and in Providence throughout the year.THE UNIVERSITY OF WALES, TRINITY ST DAVID In 2014 I joined internationally acclaimed Welsh poet, Menna Elfyn, in founding the Dylan Thomas International Summer School.The school runs for 10 days every year in late May / early June, and is anchored at the beautiful campus of The University of Wales, Trinity St David, in the small town of Lampeter, in West Wales.The campus spans beautiful downtown Chicago, inspiring students with spectacular architecture in modern and historical buildings.Students can also use resources at The Art Institute of Chicago, one of the most visited art museums in the world, and special collections and venues holding exhibitions, lectures, galleries and performances across the city.In addition to participating in a variety of external scholarships and grants, SAIC awards a number of internal scholarships and grants.For the 2014-2015 school year, SAIC awarded million in assistance funding to ensure that talented artists from all economic backgrounds had the opportunity to attend.At URI, we value the interdependence of creative writing and critical reading, and we offer students interested in creative writing a diverse, cross-disciplinary, in-depth study of the writing craft.Here you will study with prize-winning authors and poets, and be encouraged to publish your work and participate in a variety of URI creative writing initiatives.I now co-direct the program with the Welsh poet and literary impresario, Dominic Williams. The course focuses on A Sense of Place, and includes morning workshops on campus; on-site workshops at locations such as 13th century Carreg Cennan Castle, Aberglasney Gardens, and Big Pit Coal Mine; travels to Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty like the Gower Peninsula and the Pembrokeshire Coast; individual student tutorials; and evening readings by Wales’ finest authors, poets, and playwrights. Students may do the course for credit or just for fun.
