See if you can find some that align with your interests. If you have really done this right and gotten a response from the prof, you can mention it in the essay.Show how they will benefit you, why it's better for you than other schools, and why you will thrive and produce more there than elsewhere. But you still want an essay that showcases - your thoughts, ideas, intellectual pursuits, curiosities, growth and development, strengths and obstacles overcome, etc.

Make sure you ask questions specific to your major, the activities you hope to be involved in, or other unique programs/characteristics that draw you to the school so that the conversation gives you plenty of ammo for the essay. If not possible, explore it on Google Earth just to get a different flavor for what its like there.

Look up reviews of professors, food, housing, transportation, local businesses, etc.

Actually doing the research is one of the best ways to stand out over the hundreds of other applicants who write about the same things in this essay.

It's helpful to put together some specific information about the school so you can really show how you and that school fit together.

Draw from both of those lists as you show how you are a match for that school. Have some other people read it for you and give feedback. Research your chosen program, and then mention one or two specific classes or professors that appeal to you.

Make sure a person reading your essay could make similar lists if they had to - especially a list of things it says about you. Put it away for a few hours or days and come back to reread it later. By showing specific knowledge of their programs, classes, or professors, you’re showing them you are serious about their institution.

Don't namedrop a prof just to namedrop a prof though because that tends to be pretty transparent.

Once you have all of this, go back and look through your application.

Then start making a list of specific things about you that reinforce that fit.

This will help you keep your essay focused on instead of just a run-of-the-mill laundry list of clichés and great things about that school.
